As you know if you’re a regular reader of the IDigFitness Blog, one of our core philosophies is, “if you dig it, you’ll do it.” Translated, that means if your workouts are something you dread, you’re not going to do them, but if they’re something you enjoy, then they’ll get done. Well, I don’t know if this technically falls in the workout area or not, but it’s definitely health related, has to do with a form of exercise, and most people do find it to be, well, fun! A 16 year study recently reported in the American Journal of Cardiology of over 1,000 men ages 40 to 70 found that men who have sex twice a week may reduce their risk of heart attack by roughly 50% compared to men who have sex once a month or less. Sorry, ladies. I don’t think the research has yet been done for you. A 50% reduction in risk of heart attack is no small thing. One interesting question that I have is whether the risk reduction is specifically related just to sex, or would other activities requiring the same amount of exertion have a similar benefit? For now and until further research [...]

OK, just added WiiFit Plus to my “workout” arsenal. I haven’t had time to evaluate all its games and activities yet, but I can say that the balance board is going to be extremely good for my stiff, inflexible body – especially the yoga, but all of the balance games in general. Remember the philosophy of IDigFitness.Com – “if its fun, you do it.” Well, Wii Fit is definitely fun, and I think I’ll definitely be doing it (probably more than I should). Question is, will I get a measurable fitness benefit? We’ll see. My first impression is that it will have both physical and mental health benefits. Playing games is something we adults should do more of. We’ve gotten all too grown up and serious. I’ll keep you posted on how my opinion of Wii Fit progresses as I use it more.

Hey gang. Are any of you into cycling? In a former lifetime, I was a weekend competitive cyclist. I still have a keen interest in the sport. The Tour de France is underway during the month of July. Lance Armstrong is making a strong bid for another victory after coming out of retirement. Even if you don’t like cycling, just looking at the beautiful and historic countryside through which they ride is worth the time to tune in. And what about cycling for the rest of us? Well, it’s an excellent activity - one the whole family can enjoy. It’s great fun (if you’re not trying to beat Lance up a mountain. So get the kids and start riding, or look around your community for a cycling club. Most communities have recreational clubs that go out for group rides a couple of times a week. For you seniors out there, cycling is perfect. No jarring the spine, hips and knees. Ride at your own pace. You even create your own breeze on those hot summer days. So, Get to Gettin’!

I don’t know how many different ways there are to say it, but fitness should be fun. Just to prime your pump, here’s an example. This post is being done from the Denver airport after two days of hiking in the Rocky Mountains National Park. I wasn’t slogging along on a treadmill watching the timer to see how much longer I needed to go. I wasn’t trying to “get fit.” I wasn’t worried about “getting my workout in.” But guess what. Without even thinking about it, i got in about ten hours of cardio in two days while at the same time having two of the most exhilarating days of my life in some of the most magnificent natural surroundings on the planet. Beats a health club every time. Granted, we can’t do our workouts under these conditions every day, but the point is, fitness should be fun. Find a way to make that true for you, and you won’t have to worry about getting fit any more. You won’t have to try every new fad diet that comes out. You won’t have to buy every new “Revolutionary Workout” book that hits the bookstores. You’ll be fit – and you’ll [...]

OK, do we really need to go over this? EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR YOU! You know that already, right? But still, estimates are that only 15% of adults exercise regularly? That means that 85% of us are constantly in need of an excuse to avoid exercise. I can help. Let me give you a list of excuses not to exercise. There may be some you haven’t thought of yet that will be useful to you in your quest to avoid exercise: I’m too tired I don’t have time I don’t have any convenient and safe place to exercise I’m too old I don’t know how Exercise is boring It’s too cold It’s too hot I don’t want to get all sweaty I’m stressed out I can’t afford to join a health club My dog ate my running shoes I’m too out of shape to get in shape It would take several pages for me to debunk each of the foregoing lame excuses. Let’s instead just substitute the one excuse that is actually a fact: I lack the self-discipline to do what I know I should do! That’s tough love, I know, but doesn’t it really come down to that? Here’s [...]

Here are a few thoughts about “play.” You know, our motto is “if you dig it, you’ll do it.” So which do you think you’re more likely to do eagerly, “work” or “play?” I’ll bet that play is not even a small part of your daily activities as an adult. Remember when you were a kid? Play was a big part of your life. Then you “grew up” and got all serious and mature. Ughhh. Maybe you should think about having a second (or third) childhood. So, what are some of the benefits of play? Play involves exercise, so it’s good for you health. Play is a way to relax, de-stress, and reduce worry, so it’s good for your brain and psyche. Play is fun – that’s why we did it incessantly as kids. How long’s it been since you engaged in some serious play (oxymoron)? I’m talking about the kind where you’re being completely free-form – running around like a banshee giggling and just absolutely relishing the moment – the kind where you’re having so much fun enjoying the moment that you are oblivious to your surroundings and what other people may be thinking about your behavior. [Think pillow [...]
