		<description><![CDATA[OK, gang. Never let it be said that IDigFitness doesn&#8217;t keep you up to date on the latest trends in fitness research. Today, I&#8217;m going to cite you the thoughts of Seneca (born around 4 B. C.). Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher and statesman, and his writings have survived a lot longer than most of the writings on health and fitness being written today will. Now Seneca was not, as far as I can tell, a likely candidate for IDigFitness membership. I take it he was more into mental fitness than physical fitness, but he was a very wise man. What fascinates me is that the remarks from Seneca which I am about to quote line up very well with the cutting-edge developments in fitness today, which are beginning to re-think the whole idea of endless hours of aerobics and cardio. Perhaps that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m drawn to Seneca&#8217;s comments &#8211; they line up with what I already believe  So, here it is &#8211; straight from the Stoic himself: &#8220;For it is silly . . . and no way for an educated man to behave, to spend one&#8217;s time exercising the biceps, broadening the neck and shoulders and developing the [...]]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[The New Year is coming on fast, and each year around this time we all become both introspective and forward-looking. We reflect on the year gone by, usually with emphasis on our failures, and we resolve to do better. And nowhere is this mental process more prevalent than in the realm of our physical fitness &#8211; especially our desire to weigh less. Even though I have made many (and I do mean &#8220;many&#8221;) New Year&#8217;s Resolutions that I failed to keep, I am still a big fan of the process of taking time to consider both my successes and my failures, and to resolve to improve. Hope springs eternal. To me, there is something therapeutic in this process. I read a comment recently that hit home with me. Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t remember where and can&#8217;t give the author due credit. The comment was that rather than making new resolutions each year, we should just try to keep the ones we have already made. Ouch! But very true. Often, my New Year&#8217;s Resolutions are repeats of prior resolutions. I shall not, however, be deterred. Resolutions I shall make, and my quest for fitness and health shall continue, however imperfect.]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[OK, maybe that&#8217;s a little dramatic, but as you age, that becomes more and more the way it is. You can get on the path of gradual physical and mental deterioration (the two are related), or you can stay fit and vibrant. Which do you choose? I&#8217;ve heard it said more than once, “After you hit 40, it’s downhill all the way?” Really? Is that true? Is that the path you choose for yourself? There&#8217;s a Nun in her 70s who has completed the Ironman Triathlon 10 consecutive times &#8211; maybe more by now! In case you don’t know, that’s a 2.4 mile open water swim in the ocean, followed by a 112 mile bicycle ride through the Kona lava fields, followed by a full marathon (26.2 mile run). It&#8217;s tough &#8211; very tough! I know. I&#8217;ve done it. So drop the “age” excuse. It doesn’t fly. There are many people in their 70s, 80s and even 90s, who still hike mountain trails, play tennis, run marathons, and look fantastic.
