As we age and begin to have a few battle scars (injuries, strains, overuse, etc.) we find that we develop joint pains. You know, that sore, aching ankle, knee, hip, or shoulder that hurts when you move. So, what’s the solution. Since it’s painful to move the joint, many of us naturally tend to avoid any motion that causes discomfort. Bad idea! Limiting movement in the painful joint can weaken the muscles, which just compounds the problem. Another common solution is to start popping over the counter pain relievers. Quick fix? Yes, but not a long term solution. Any relief achieved by pain relievers is temporary, and there are medical downsides to the regular use of these medications. So what is the best solution? The right set of exercises can offer a long term solution to joint pain. Done regularly, the right exercises could allow you to postpone or even avoid surgery on that painful joint. By strengthening the supportive muscles and restoring flexibility relief can be obtained. Oh, and I won’t even go into to benefits generally of exercise. You already know about that, right?

OK, just added WiiFit Plus to my “workout” arsenal. I haven’t had time to evaluate all its games and activities yet, but I can say that the balance board is going to be extremely good for my stiff, inflexible body – especially the yoga, but all of the balance games in general. Remember the philosophy of IDigFitness.Com – “if its fun, you do it.” Well, Wii Fit is definitely fun, and I think I’ll definitely be doing it (probably more than I should). Question is, will I get a measurable fitness benefit? We’ll see. My first impression is that it will have both physical and mental health benefits. Playing games is something we adults should do more of. We’ve gotten all too grown up and serious. I’ll keep you posted on how my opinion of Wii Fit progresses as I use it more.

This one’s for you folks who are not in their 20s any more. You’ll know if I’m talking to you if you have the aches and pains that come along with developing arthritis. There are all kinds of prescription and over-the-counter medications which supposedly will make you feel better. Personally, I am skeptical of everything produced by big pharma. Enter the Wilen Sisters. If you don’t know who they are, they are natural health advocates who have demonstrated an amazingly effective array of folk and natural remedies on major television networks and in their books. Here’s a sample of one of their remedies for arthritis which you can try right now. I’ve seen the “gin-soaked raisin cure” for arthritis several times in my reading, but it probably was either originated or made popular by the Wilen Sisters. Here’s what you need: One pound of golden raisins Approximately one pin off gin Glass bowl (Pyrex or something similar) Glass jar with lid All you have to do is to spread the golden raisins on the bottom of the glass bowl and pour in enough gin to cover them. Wait until all the gin is absorbed, which could take 5 to 7 [...]

Another attention grabbing headline. Sorry, but I have your best interests in mind. The full sentence is, “Get Up Off Your Lazy Rear and Exercise!” You know it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself (and your family). Here are some more reasons. A report in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women who began walking a mile a day after age 65 reduced their risk of dying of heart disease, cancer or any other cause by about 50% as compared to women who were sedentary. A study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2005, showed that moderate and high activity levels resulted in extended life expectancy and helped reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. As we keep saying here at idigfitness.com (If you dig it, you’ll do it), even things not normally considered as “workouts” – things you enjoy – qualify for the health benefits associated with exercise. For example, gardening works. One study found that people who spend as little as an hour or two a week gardening are less likely to die of cardiac arrest, as compared to inactive people. So, get to gettin’ people. Be active. Enjoy.

OK, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but as you age, that becomes more and more the way it is. You can get on the path of gradual physical and mental deterioration (the two are related), or you can stay fit and vibrant. Which do you choose? I’ve heard it said more than once, “After you hit 40, it’s downhill all the way?” Really? Is that true? Is that the path you choose for yourself? There’s a Nun in her 70s who has completed the Ironman Triathlon 10 consecutive times – maybe more by now! In case you don’t know, that’s a 2.4 mile open water swim in the ocean, followed by a 112 mile bicycle ride through the Kona lava fields, followed by a full marathon (26.2 mile run). It’s tough – very tough! I know. I’ve done it. So drop the “age” excuse. It doesn’t fly. There are many people in their 70s, 80s and even 90s, who still hike mountain trails, play tennis, run marathons, and look fantastic. Despite what you may hear the armchair quarterbacks say, there is no truth to the rumor that you must be less fit after you turn 40 years of age. I [...]

Practical Life Extension What Modern Science Says About Reversing The Aging Process Most seniors don’t just wake up one morning stiff as a board, fat, short of breath, with high bodyfat and low muscle tone. This is a gradual process that moves at a glacial speed over decades. But here’s the great part. No matter how much you have neglected, or even abused, your body, and no matter what your current age is, this amazing organism has the ability to regenerate itself and become fit again, if you’ll just work with it and give it half a chance. We all seem to want to live forever, but we don’t want to pay the price to extend our lives in a meaningful way, with proper nutrition and exercise. It’s kind of the reverse problem of the old proverb: “Everyone wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die.” So why do we want to live forever? According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, author of “Chasing Life” and CNN’s Senior Medical Corespondent, we do not. The real quest isn’t eternal life on earth according to Gupta, but rather an exceptional life. While interviewing the foremost authorities on anti-aging and life extension, [...]
