According to a 2007 study which examined death rates among Europeans over 40 years of age, it was found that the death rate was twice as high for unmarried men than for married men. Hmmm. Where women are concerned, the disparity in death rates was much more modest as between unmarried and married women. So what are we to conclude from this information? I can’t think of anything except that married men are statistically less likely to die prematurely. Let’s not discuss whether married or unmarried men “feel” more alive right now. And, I wonder if those researchers considered the effect on life expectancy resulting from the stress of a divorce, which occurs to over 50% of married people. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “there are three kinds of lies: 1) lies, 2) damn lies, and 3) statistics.

OK, I’m guilty. I do lean toward the “natural health” side of the equation, and the article I’m about to report on doesn’t change my mind. All you have to do is watch an hour or so of TV and you’ll see many commercial advertisements for prescriptions medications. Those ads are not cheap. There’s big money in medicine and pharmaceuticals these days, and you’re naive if you think those big bucks don’t influence medical treatment. And, while you’re watching those commercials, listen carefully to the disclaimers toward the end that they read so fast they hope you won’t notice. Basically, what they say is, “if this medicine doesn’t kill you, it might improve your symptoms!” But, it’s always good to listen to all sides of a discussion and science has produced many health benefits for us all. Here’s an excerpt from an article I found at www.sciencebasedmedicine.org which, I must admit, makes some very good points in support of traditional science based medicine: “There once was a time when all food was organic and no pesticides were used. Health problems were treated with folk wisdom and natural remedies. There was no obesity, and people got lots of exercise. And in [...]

What in the world am I talking about now? Stink or Die – what does that mean. Glad you asked. Here it is. Did you know that absorbing any amount of aluminum into your body is harmful. And guess what else – the way it gets into your body makes a big difference. It seems unavoidable these days that we are going to be exposed to aluminum. It enters our bodies when we breathe, eat, or drink. But only a fraction is absorbed by our bodies this way because our lungs, stomachs, and kidneys work together and eliminate over 95% of ingested aluminum. Here’s where we get to the “stink or die” part. Aluminum applied to your skin can build up to toxic levels. And how do you think that might happen? It’s something most of us do every day without even thinking about it – we put on antiperspirant. Aluminum is a major ingredient in most name-brand antiperspirants. And while you may apply only a small amount of antiperspirant to your skin, using it day after day can result in chronic exposure to aluminum. Research has shown a clear link between aluminum and Alzheimer’s Disease. My thanks to Dr. [...]

OK, here’s some food, I mean drink, for thought. Researchers in Norway followed 5,033 adults, who averaged 58 years of age, for seven years. Out of that group, those adults that drank at least four glasses of wine over a two-week period had a lower risk of poor cognitive function than those who drank less than one glass during the same period of time. Adults who never drank wine had the highest risk of poor cognitive function. That’s something to think about, isn’t it? The researchers were, however, unable to define a optimum level of wine consumption to get the positive benefits, so you’ll have to figure that out on your own for now. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating alcohol consumption, nor am I advocating refraining from it. I’m just reporting what these researchers found. It’s for each of you to decide what, if anything, to do with the information.

I heard something recently that rang so true I thought I’d share it with you. It has particular application to our quest for fitness. Some of you may have heard it before. Unfortunately, I don’t know where it originated. Please take time to add this to your arsenal of helpful thoughts when you are “thinking” about skipping a workout: “Thinking determines what we want. Action determines what we get.” Isn’t that great? Most of us seem to be better “thinkers” than “doers” when it comes to staying fit. I’m always thinking about changing my workout or changing my eating habits, but I frequently fall “a little” short in the implementation stage. Do you ever have that problem too? Maybe committing this saying to memory and making it our mantra will help.

OK. I know not exercising is bad for your health. But I didn’t realize exercising could also be bad for your health. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2009 there were 575 reported instances of exercisers being injured by treadmills alone. Now if you extrapolate that to all the different kinds of exercise equipment – jump ropes, exercise balls, weights, frosted mugs (those things can be heavy and barroom brawls are brutal, but I digress) not to mention all such injuries that go unreported, the injury toll must be staggering. Why do I suspect that a lot of the treadmill injuries reported in the CPSC report are a direct result of, shall we say, a lack of mindfulness? Can you say “cell phone” or “ipod?” Anyway, keep exercising, have fun, and pay attention!

I’ll bet a bunch of you Fitness Diggers are trying to lose a few (or more than a few) pounds, especially having just come through Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day if you’re in the USA. And, the Super Bowl is coming too – another opportunity to eat too much of the wrong kind of food. If you’re like most who are trying to lose weight, you’ve been “trying” for most of your adult life. True? Why do we have such a difficult time with losing pounds? Well, there are a number of factors in play, but one of the significant ones that’s often overlooked or intentionally hidden by the marketers of diet programs and weight loss paraphernalia is our desire for the quick fix. I think that’s resulted in more failed diets than perhaps any other factor. Unless your wedding is coming up, what’s the hurry? Don’t you think it would make more sense to make small adjustments in the food you eat and the activities you do (or don’t do), and let the pounds come off over time? Trying to lose a pound a day is a recipe for failure. Losing a pound a week, or even a [...]

OK, gang. Never let it be said that IDigFitness doesn’t keep you up to date on the latest trends in fitness research. Today, I’m going to cite you the thoughts of Seneca (born around 4 B. C.). Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher and statesman, and his writings have survived a lot longer than most of the writings on health and fitness being written today will. Now Seneca was not, as far as I can tell, a likely candidate for IDigFitness membership. I take it he was more into mental fitness than physical fitness, but he was a very wise man. What fascinates me is that the remarks from Seneca which I am about to quote line up very well with the cutting-edge developments in fitness today, which are beginning to re-think the whole idea of endless hours of aerobics and cardio. Perhaps that’s why I’m drawn to Seneca’s comments – they line up with what I already believe So, here it is – straight from the Stoic himself: “For it is silly . . . and no way for an educated man to behave, to spend one’s time exercising the biceps, broadening the neck and shoulders and developing the [...]
