If you read this blog regularly, you probably know that I believe in personal accountability, so that headline is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Despite wishing it were otherwise, if you’re overweight, it IS your fault, unless someone is forcing your to eat more calories than you require. That being said, here’s an interesting bit of research. In a study at Eastern Illinois University, researchers found that people consume 65% more calories when eating with someone who opts for second helpings than they do when dining with a person who doesn’t go for seconds. Just being aware of that fact might help you control your intake. Be mindful the next time that you are dining with friends. Don’t go for that second helping just because they do. Are you really hungry, or are you just being “sociable?”

The Breathalyzer – you probably think it’s just for those who may have a drinking problem. Well, not anymore. There’s a new version of the breathalyzer which is being used (can you believe it) to help with weight loss. The ReeVue Indirect Calorimeter is a device which is used somewhat like a breathalyzer to perform a 10-minute test which checks a person’s metabolic rate and ascertains how many calories that person requires on a daily basis to maintain or lose weight. Right now the ReeVue Calorimeter is only found at a few health clubs and doctors’ offices, but with the nanny government and the first lady’s war on fat, don’t be surprised if the police start pulling “gravity challenged” individuals over and administering “weightalyzer” tests any day now!

Did you know that there is a link between the amount and quality of your sleep and your weight? Actually, the link is between the amount and quality of your sleep and your metabolism, but you probably know that higher metabolism generally means less fat on your body. It has been clinically shown that a lack of sleep affects levels of the hormones leptin and ghrelin, both of which are linked to appetite and eating behavior. When a person is deprived of adequate sleep, that person’s body reduces the production of leptin, which is a hormone responsible for telling your brain that no more food is needed. And to make it a double-whammy, the sleep deprived person’s body also increases its levels of ghrelin, the hormone responsible for triggering hunger sensation in the body. Fine! So what’s the end result? Well, that would be decreased satiety, increased hunger, and slower metabolism. Can you say, “weight gain?”

I just received the following email from Dr. Al Sears, whom I’ve been following for years. I am a devoted advocate of his PACE Program for fitness. In this brief email, he gives one of the most understandable descriptions of why we are fat. It’s worth the few minutes it takes to read. I truly believe it will help you if you are struggling with weight issues. Coincidentally (or not so coincidentally), Dr. Sears’ advice is very consistent with the information in Tim Ferriss’ new book, 4 Hour Body, which I recently read. I am currently testing the program Mr. Ferriss recommends in his book, and it seems to be working very well. Here’s Dr. Sears’ email: Have you ever shivered on a cold day? Felt a little light-headed when you stood up too fast? I’m sure you’ve broken a sweat while doing your PACE exercises, right? In all these situations, what you’re feeling is your body trying to return itself to a “normal” state. In medical terms, we call it homeostasis – a fancy way of saying that your body is reacting to its environment and trying to get back within its natural chemical, hormonal and temperature ranges. For [...]

My friends and fitness experts Joel Marion and Arnel Ricafranca just released a report entitled “4 Keys to 4xs FASTER Fat Loss,” and for the next few days it’s 100% freee to download: To pick up a free copy to review for yourself, just click this link: 4 Keys to 4xs FASTER Fat Loss. So far, here’s what I know about the report. They reveal 4 unique “under the radar” methods to have you legitimately burning 1,000+ calories in a SINGLE workout, and WITHOUT having to work out for hours on end, either. Here’s the deal. They are launching a new fitness product, and obviously they hope that when you review the free report, you’ll consider buying their product. Hey, fair enough. There are no strings and you don’t have to purchase anything to get the free report, but I’ll warn you: after you see [...]

Listen, if it’s not obvious, I am not a nutritionist or other qualified scientist in the field of health and nutrition. I blog about stuff related to fitness that interests me. Giving myself a little credit, I think I’m a pretty fair researcher and I do have a lot of curiosity about health and fitness. All that is said to lead into this interesting report about the use of “diet” soft drinks. I have “known” in my heart that those things can’t be good for you. Let’s face it, conventional sodas are toxic – basically a bottle or can of food coloring and sugar with zero nutritional value. So, what about diet sodas? Well, consider this. In 2005, data was gathered from the 25-year long San Antonio Heart Study which showed that consumption of diet sodas significantly increased the likelihood of substantial weight gain (considerably more than consumption of regular soda). In fact, on average each diet soft drink consumed by the participants in the study per day increased their risk of becoming overweight within the next 7-8 years by 65 percent. And guess what? Consumption of diet sodas also made them 41 percent more likely to become obese. So, if [...]

I’ll bet a bunch of you Fitness Diggers are trying to lose a few (or more than a few) pounds, especially having just come through Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day if you’re in the USA. And, the Super Bowl is coming too – another opportunity to eat too much of the wrong kind of food. If you’re like most who are trying to lose weight, you’ve been “trying” for most of your adult life. True? Why do we have such a difficult time with losing pounds? Well, there are a number of factors in play, but one of the significant ones that’s often overlooked or intentionally hidden by the marketers of diet programs and weight loss paraphernalia is our desire for the quick fix. I think that’s resulted in more failed diets than perhaps any other factor. Unless your wedding is coming up, what’s the hurry? Don’t you think it would make more sense to make small adjustments in the food you eat and the activities you do (or don’t do), and let the pounds come off over time? Trying to lose a pound a day is a recipe for failure. Losing a pound a week, or even a [...]

Is it really possible to burn more fat by exercising LESS? Well, here’s an interesting study I read about done by researchers at Quebec’s Laval University. They divided the participants in the study into two groups. Group One did long-duration exercise and Group Two did repeated short-duration exercise. The long-duration group cycled for 45 minutes without interruption. The short-duration group cycled in repeated short bursts of 15 to 90 seconds, and rested between exercise bursts. When the measurements were taken after the periods of exercise, it was learned that the long-duration group burned twice as many calories as the short-duration group. That’s no surprise. But, here is what is really surprising. The long-duration group did not burn more fat. In fact, the short-duration group lost nine times more fat than the long-duration group for every calorie burned. So, how do you feel about continuing those long, boring, cardio workouts? If you’re beginning to think twice about continuing that folly, I suggest you continue your education by reading more about Dr. Al Sears’ PACE program. Click here to check it out.
